The pesticide registration process includes many common elements, but some aspects are specific to the pesticide category. The categories that are important for the registration process are: Conventional pesticides, includes all ingredients other than biological pesticides and antimicrobial pesticides.

Reducing the use of pesticides and choosing less toxic pesticides may reduce risks placed on society and the environment from pesticide use. Integrated pest management, the use of multiple approaches to control pests, is becoming widespread and has been used with success in countries such as Indonesia, China, Bangladesh, the U.S., Australia. But what about pesticides used on the hundreds of millions of dollars in grapes, apples, coffee, and other produce arriving in American grocery stores from Chile, Brazil, or Colombia? There are moves in Latin America to gradually restrict or at least, officially, ban the use of the most hazardous pesticides. Federal Pesticide Regulation. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates pesticides at the national level. Congress gives the EPA this authority through several federal laws, including the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).
